"Shen Yan" is fifteen years old, an apprentice at Jishengtang, a contract apothecary in Anping County of the Great Shuo Dynasty. When his fate is assessed upon reaching adulthood, he is judged to have a "Gray-Rank Medicine Pouch Fate," deemed suited only for testing medicines and destined to die young. Because the apothecary considers his fate lowly, it chooses him to test dangerous prescriptions. As he teeters on the brink of death, he awakens a hidden ability called "A Hundred Refinements Leave Their Mark," which provides visible feedback from bodily injuries, changes in medicinal properties, and physical training.
