I Became the Company's Pillar by Slacking Off

The day I woke up, I hadn't been beaten to death.

I just had a stomach hemorrhage and an irregular heartbeat. Half an hour later, and I would've been gone.

My phone was lit up with 99+ work messages.

The director asked, "Can you finish revising the proposal today?"

A coworker asked, "What's your computer password? I need it urgently."

The whole company tagged me: "Everyone's working overtime this Saturday. Reply to confirm."

Looking at all those messages, I typed four words:

"I want to live."

Then I sent a message to the company:

"Starting today, I'll only do what's part of my job. I won't answer messages after work. I won't take calls on weekends. If you have a problem with that, fire me."

I thought I'd be fired.

Instead, the boss called me into his office and handed me a document himself:

"A new position, double the monthly salary, plus stock options. There's only one condition: help me keep an eye on all the things that need doing but nobody does."

Me: "Can I leave work on time?"

Boss: "Yes."

Me: "Can I wear slippers?"

Boss: "...On Fridays."

The whole company went crazy.

Only later did they realize that I dared to slack off because I understood better than anyone how this company should run.

And the boss finally admitted:

"This company can run without anyone, but without you, it runs badly."
