How Grandpa Tricked Me Into Marrying at the Military Base

Pharmaceutical prodigy Li Shuyao was only twenty when her two grandfathers teamed up to trick her into going to the Southwestern Military Region. One lured her with the promise of “a lab three times bigger than the one in Beijing,” while the other dangled the bait of “your fiancé is over there.” The lab turned out to have peeling walls, a leaky fume hood, and a hand-cranked centrifuge. Its label read: “Turn slowly, five thousand RPM.”

She clutched her newly issued marriage certificate as she sat opposite Battalion Commander He Xiangbei, whose face was darker than the bottom of a wok. He brought her meals as punctually as a clock and pursued her more fiercely than he fought. Everyone in the military region knew that Battalion Commander He's wife only had eyes for test tubes and beakers. But when foreign spies set their sights on Li Shuyao's blood-clotting formula, this “research maniac” and her “reconnaissance soldier's wife” discovered that her most reliable partner was the very man she'd been pushed into marrying.

From a hand-cranked centrifuge to an imported high-speed model, from the cafeteria's intelligence network to hilarious group battles with the whole unit, Li Shuyao patiently nurtured love like an experiment, only to find herself getting used to being “fed” first. A 1970s military-marriage story that balances funny research antics with romance. No melodrama, just silliness. They marry first and fall in love later, and everyone stays smart throughout.
