A Lone Pawn

In Chongqing in 1944, a man whose file had been closed for three years came back from the dead. Liu Yansheng, forty-two years old, with ten years of insomnia and an old injury to his left shoulder. His sole mission: get the third-layer key to the Japanese “Magic Flute” System out of Chongqing within six days. His window of opportunity was just six days. He was no spearhead among the secret agents. He was the last piece on the board that could “move by itself.” When he wasn’t shooting, he picked locks; when he wasn’t fighting, he dismantled traps. He slipped in through the enemy’s gate, broke out during a shift change among the river police, and passed through checkpoints in the blind spots of postal trucks. Every move looked less like an escape than a game of chess. Zheng Huating laid an inescapable net, waiting for him to walk into it, but each time Liu slipped through its smallest mesh. The six-day delivery was complete, but the larger game had only just begun. The conversion tables, codebook, and seventh step of the algorithm were all being assembled. Zheng Huating had already drawn three circles on the map in red pencil. Carrying old wounds and twenty pages of paper, Liu Yansheng was walking along a salt road that did not exist on any map, heading toward Anshun without stopping. This man wasn’t running away. He was playing chess. His final game.
