Lin Xiaoyu was born on the day a once-in-a-century fish run arrived at the fishing village.
The old fishermen all said the child was "a lucky star from the sea."
Unfortunately, three-and-a-half-year-old Yuyu hadn't had a taste of that good fortune. Her grandmother thought she was a useless girl, her eldest aunt stole her family's fish, and her second aunt stood by and laughed.
Her parents were honest and hardworking, but when the family split up, all they got was a drafty thatched hut, a torn fishing net, and half a sack of dried sweet potatoes.
Three-and-a-half-year-old Yuyu stood on the shore on her little legs and sniffed.
Yep, there was a nest of big sea snails beneath the rocks to the east. Clams were buried beneath the sand to the west. And farther out...a huge school of yellow croaker was swimming this way!
From then on, the third branch of the Lin family had better days ahead.
She toddled off to forage on the shore. While other people searched for ages to find a single crab, she only had to point, and giant lobsters, wild abalone, and premium sea cucumbers hopped into her bucket!

At low tide, a reef covered in wild oysters just happened to emerge, making the whole village line up to call Yuyu their little lucky star!
From being so poor they could hear their stomachs rumble to feasting on seafood every meal, from a ramshackle thatched hut to a spacious seaside home, the third branch of the Lin family quietly struck it rich thanks to one fierce and adorable little girl!
