In the northern countryside of the 1980s, Xu Nan married Wang Jianguo at the age of eighteen. Wang Jianguo went south to pursue his career within two days of their marriage, and there was no news for ten years. For ten years, she worked hard in the Wang family without complaint, endured the harsh treatment of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Liu, and suffered all kinds of hardships. Ten years later, Wang Jianguo drove a car back to his hometown in fine clothes, and brought back his mistress Hu Lili from the city. Seeing that her son was getting rich, Mrs. Liu despised Xu Nan even more. Frustrated, Xu Nan announced her divorce. After the divorce, she settled in an abandoned mud house in the west end of the village, and next door was Wei Ye, the pig butcher who was feared by the whole village. Wei Ye's care allowed Xu Nan to start a new life, and the two eventually lived a good life together.
