The Morning-Dusk Star has no sunrise or sunset. Its sunward side is eternal daylight and molten lava, while its shaded side is eternal darkness and ice. Humans can only live in the narrow band between them, coexisting with the Fire Folk and the Ice Folk under one shared ironclad rule: one bond per lifetime, never to be changed.
When he turns eighteen, a boy waits in the rift of dawn and dusk for his bonded partner. Others get a Flame Wolf, a Moon Bear, an Ice Snake, or a Fire Bat. He gets a gray-white beastling, no bigger than his palm, without even a name.
