Changsha is home to a semi-secret Special Research Bureau. Its powerful director has been entrusted by several prominent families to look after a group of young people from distinguished backgrounds: Lin Wanshu, Xie Heng, Shen Yanzhou, Fu Ye, Lu Mang, and Su Ning.
Ji Yan is the director’s right-hand man, responsible for coordinating intelligence, personnel, and equipment. He handles all day-to-day matters with the team. Unless everything is on the verge of collapse, the six won’t bother Shen Que, Changsha’s highest-ranking official.
This core action team has authorization to contact higher-ups directly, but it takes on very few special assignments. Once a case is opened, it can take anywhere from two or three months to half a year to resolve completely.
On days without assignments, they use vacations as cover, traveling between Changsha, Guiyang, the Qinling Mountains, and other places. While outsiders think they’re sightseeing, they secretly investigate geological anomalies and search for underground ruins buried by time.
Their permanent base is the Guiyang Field Station, where Professor Cui is stationed. When strange clues come in from different regions, orders are sent from Changsha to Guiyang. Lin Wanshu and the others rush into danger, venture deep into secret realms, and investigate the truth behind the bizarre incidents. As crises pile up, they face the unknown while struggling to navigate the competing demands of officialdom and personal relationships.
