Chen Mo is a con artist.
He slips into the art world, wears bespoke suits, and sits in the most expensive auction houses, appraising paintings and setting people up. By day, he’s a young, composed art consultant among the upper crust. At night, he returns to his rented room in a working-class neighborhood and stares at an old photograph, counting the debts of the past twelve years.
The man he’s looking for is Shen Mingtang.
Shen Mingtang is the head of the Shen family. Refined and taciturn, he arranges everyone around him like a chess piece. He knew Chen Mo would come, and he knows who the young man resembles. Rather than send him away, he keeps him close, watching to see what he will choose.
Shen Yuan is the Shen family’s daughter. Like Chen Mo, she wants to burn this old house down from within. Qi Ye is Chen Mo’s partner, the one who makes the most noise and is the hardest to get rid of. Together they set traps, sink deeper and deeper, and discover that the old debts involve more than money. They involve lives, too, and a "Don’t be afraid" that has been hidden for many years.
This is a story about cons, cold cases, and choices.
No one is wholly good.
But even so, some people still want to tear a hole in the lies in the end.
One-line recommendation
They’ve fooled plenty of people. In the end, they just want to see if they can stop fooling themselves.
