[Definitely not a wish-fulfillment story + painful and oppressive + first-person narration + absurd realism + unhinged plot + not one normal person in the family]
As the population swelled and the wheels of modern life rolled on, the funeral business flourished more than ever. My family had been in the funeral trade, or as the saying goes, the business of "white affairs," ever since my father’s time.
Unfortunately, amid the nationwide wave of brand consolidation, acquisitions swept through the funeral industry too. And after my father died in a car accident, our family-run funeral home was forced to struggle to survive against corporate giants and all the harsh realities of life.
We work in the business of the dead. We have seen our share of life and death. The dead cannot come back to life, and the living must carry on living well. Not for any other reason, but simply for the sake of living.
