[Urban mystery + otherworldly fantasy + coming-of-age + ensemble cast of different races + a touch of Lovecraftian horror with a vast world + laugh-until-you-drop comedy]
The world is made up of seven rings layered on top of one another, and humanity occupies just one of them.
Ghosts, demons, monsters, devils, and gods each live in their own worlds and go about their own business. None of them can be bothered with the others.
Then a rift appears, and some things crawl over from the other layers.
My name is Yang Changjiang. I'm sixteen, and I'm in my first year of high school.
All I wanted was to coast through school in peace, but the world wouldn't let me. I got dumped into a school that covers room and board and even pays you. Not all my classmates are human. The cafeteria serves a dish called deep-fried Otherworld demon chicken legs, each bigger than my face. There's a river outside the dorm window that glows at night, so brightly I can't sleep.
The story goes something like this: You finish laughing, and then your back goes cold. You get over the chill, and then it makes you laugh again.
Recommended reading setup: wrap yourself in a blanket, turn on the lights, and keep a bag of chips nearby (share some with me).
“Friendly reminder: Want to curse me out halfway through? Go ahead. Want to curse me out after you finish? Too bad, I'm already writing my next book.”
