[Republican Era] [The Young Marshal's Sole Favorite] [Clever Heroine] [Mutual Devotion] [Sweet Romance] [War]
The night the city fell, Shen Yuting managed to rescue only half a sack of flour and an iron wok.
She set up a wonton stall beside a pile of corpses. When defeated soldiers tried to seize her food, she clung to it with all her might.
Fang Suyuan fired a shot that drove the soldiers back, then looked down at her. “Aren't you afraid to die?”
She looked up, her face caked with dirt, but her eyes shone. “I am. But I have to sell all the wontons, or there'll be no rice to cook tomorrow.”
After eating a bowl of wontons, Fang Suyuan suddenly spat blood in front of everyone. The entire marshal's residence drew their guns on her. “The wontons were poisoned!”
She hadn't poisoned them, but Fang Suyuan wouldn't let her go.
Imprisoned in the marshal's residence, she overheard the news through a dog hole. She set a fire to alert the whole estate, just so she could tell him the truth.
Fang Suyuan stared at her. “How did you know?”
She wiped the dirt from her face. “Anyone and everyone comes to eat at my wonton stall.”
“Then from now on, you'll stay at the marshal's residence and sell wontons.”
The enemy surrounded the city, and supplies ran out. She set up ten enormous pots beneath the city wall and poured in the last of the flour.
“The city can't fall, and the people can't starve.”
He smiled. “If the city falls, what am I supposed to marry you in?”
Later, she ventured out of the city alone to gather medicine for him, luring the enemy away on her bad leg. He took a blade for her and, even as blood poured from his wound, smiled and tried to comfort her.
Back to back, they fought their way to safety.
But Fang Suyuan never expected his greatest rival in love to be not the enemy outside the city, but Gu Qingyan, the gentle, refined army doctor in the marshal's residence.
Shen Yuting smiled at him. “Young Marshal Fang, are you jealous?”
He turned his face away. “No.”
In the end, the city stood, and the wonton stall remained.
This time, I'll spend the rest of my life giving you a bowl of hot soup.
