A Sweet Kiss in Early Summer

Youthful campus romance / sweet pampering / mutual secret crushes / desk mates

On the first day after transferring to Nancheng No. 1 High School, Wen Li finds herself in the most mortifying situation of her life

She gets lost, is hit by a basketball, accidentally kisses the school heartthrob Jiang Ye, and then asks him, “Did you like my candy?”

Jiang Ye wipes his lips and says, “Lychee flavor. Pretty sweet.”

From then on, her high school life goes completely off track.

Jiang Ye is a star at Nancheng No. 1 High School: the basketball team captain, top of his year, aloof and sharp-tongued, yet impossibly gentle with her.

He shields her from the dean, and takes off his uniform jacket in front of everyone to lend it to her;

He breaks his ruler in half during an exam to share it with her, and takes a detour across half the city to walk her home;

Even in her desk, her favorite lychee candies always seem to appear.

Wen Li thinks all of this is just what desk mates are “naturally supposed to do.”

Then she discovers that Jiang Ye has kept a candy wrapper she gave him as a child, secretly holding on to it for three years.

Only then does she realize that this encounter, from beginning to end, was someone’s “long-planned scheme.”

“Wen Li, do you believe that some things in this world just feel right from the very first taste?”

“Like lychee.”

“Like you.”
