The time-traveling Toneri once again steps into the everyday bustle of Beika Town.
He is always at her side, shielding her from danger, accepting the snacks she offers, and clumsily learning how to be gentle in the human world.
And the woman no one else can see is always beside Toneri. She gently embraces him, patiently talks him through things, and even nudges him toward Ran Mouri, cheerfully teaching him what she likes and dislikes, and what he should do now.
“She likes cats. Get one. I like them too, after all.”
“She seems brave, but she can be a little timid sometimes. Remember to hold her when that happens.”
“She likes red now. She hasn’t come to like white as much as I do, so remember that, Toneri.”
“She likes literature and music too. How convenient that she has the most famous fantasy novelist of Japan’s Heisei era right here in her arms, hmm, darling?”
Every now and then, Ran Mouri catches a fleeting glimpse of a figure who looks so much like her, and an inexplicable warmth of familiarity wells up in her heart.
“Who is she?”
“She looks so much like me?”
“How does Mr. Toneri know so much about me?”
And the figure behind him is also Ran Mouri, or rather, Otsutsuki Ran.
But Toneri keeps deceiving himself, viewing her as a dissociative hallucination brought on by longing. His heart is full of guilt, and he can’t bring himself to openly embrace the love before him.
Yet the departed make way for his new beginning, and hidden in every tender act of support is love.
“I’ll be your eyes. Make sure you protect her and yourself, okay?”
“Remember, come find me quickly next time, okay, Toneri? You know your Ran is terrified of ghosts...”
Okay okay. Still the same sentence. Of all the anime, only Ran and Kagome are the ones I hope to watch as my daughter. Little angel and little sun YYDS. 😠
