Shen Nian, pen name “Trying Not to Leave Things Unfinished,” wrote seven novels in eight years, and every single one had an unfinished ending.
“Sudden meteorite ending,” “the whole cast dies of illness,” “the protagonist becomes a monk”: readers call her the “Queen of Cliffhangers.”
After a car accident on a rainy night, she wakes up on an abandoned railway track.
A blue panel appears before her:
[Welcome back, Shen Nian. Loading character background… Load failed. 87% of background data missing. Today’s task: survive to the ending.]
She has fallen into the infinite-flow world she wrote herself.
Zombies line up with shopping lists to buy cat food; a discarded concubine from the cold palace sets up a pancake stall and demands answers from her; Sadako scrolls short videos to learn how to scare people; a black cat marshal sneers around a mouthful of dried fish: “Woman, you’ve been on hiatus for twenty years.”
The System grants her the [Unfinished Ending Authority]. As the creator, she can change the plot with a word.
Shen Nian is ecstatic: Zombies become vegetarians! The emperor turns face-blind! The insectoid race becomes harmless!
Then the bugs show up: the zombies devour all the supplies, the emperor sends compensation payments to the enemy nation, and the insectoids turn into pink, fluffy balls that smash through the city walls…
She thought she was there to tie up loose ends. But only after one instance after another comes to an end does the truth finally emerge…
