According to records in the ancient classics "The Biography of Zhong Kui", "Yi Shi of the Tang Dynasty" and "Supplementary Talks", in the year when Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty ascended the throne, Zhong Kui (played by Ouyang Zhenhua) went to Chang'an to take the exam and wrote five chapters of "A Banquet in Yingzhou". He was hailed as a "genius" by the examiner and ranked first among the tributes. However, during the palace examination, the treacherous prime minister Lu Qi judged people based on their appearance and made repeated slanders, causing him to fail to be the top candidate. In a rage, Zhong Kui hit his head on a palace pillar and died, shocking the government and the public. Xuanzong Xia Zhao named Zhong Kui the "Great God of Conquering Demons", traveled all over the world to "kill demons and exorcise evil spirits", and was buried with the official title of No. 1 Scholar. The Jade Emperor was grateful that Zhong Kui was willing to die as a martyr in order to fight for justice, so he made Zhong Kui a god and made him take charge of injustices in the world.
