An international student at Humboldt University accidentally traveled to Germany during World War I in 1917 and became Captain Hersmann, a Junker noble. The empire was slipping into the abyss of collapse, supplies were scarce, and people's livelihoods were in ruins. He was transferred to the Grand General Staff for gilding, and met the still young Kesselin. He did not try to save the country, but just to avoid the fate of destruction after defeat.
