Jiang Fan is just an ordinary person. Before the disaster, he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts. He lived alone in the ruins to survive, occasionally saving people on the roadside. He was taken in by a well-meaning team and witnessed them pushing the old man into the fog in desperate situations. He collected clues in his wanderings, saw through the rules, walked to the rift - and then turned around and left.
