Lu Linchuan is 28 years old and works as an A&R in Shanghai. The singer he signed, Jiang Yan, jumped from the rooftop of the 19th floor, leaving behind a tape and his last words - "Help me take them to a place where you can hear the sea."
He took the tapes and 300 vinyl records and fled to Dongji Island, the easternmost part of the mainland, and opened a record bar called "Ebb Tide" in a stone house.
There are no tourists on the island in winter. He thought he would sit through the bar alone.
But he met a group of people: Lao Wei, a former reporter with scars on his face, A Zhi, a surfing coach who refused to chase the waves, Fang Zhi, a free diver who pushed open the door to ask for liquor on a rainy night, Su Nian, a doctor on the island who was stitching without looking up, and Jiang Wan, who appeared in the fog with a mountaineering bag on his back.
Six people got together on an isolated island to repair roofs, fish, drink, and play records. Lu Linchuan found that he began to "live life" instead of "suffering time".
But the sea will ebb and flow. The wind will come, the waves will come, and those things thought to be left on the shore will be swept back into the sea.
They were there until the sea took everything away.
