My Brother Is a Door God

Shentu and Yulei were forcibly dismissed from their posts by the Heavenly Court and sent down to the mortal realm to undergo tribulation because they had failed to meet the Door Gods’ performance targets. (People nowadays don’t even put up Door God pictures anymore.) Shentu was reborn as Yan Shiyi, a young researcher at an institute for intangible cultural heritage: gentle as jade, but so broke he could barely scrape by. Yulei was reborn as Leng Zhao, his hot-tempered younger brother, born to a different father and mother.

Yan Shiyi (gentle in public, scheming in private): Whenever his younger brother came back from a fight with a few bruises, he would apply medicine while sighing, “How many times have I told you to stay calm when dealing with people?” Then he’d turn around and post the other guy’s dirt on the forum!

Leng Zhao (school bully, but totally devoted to his big brother): The whole school was afraid of him. Only he knew that he had nightmares every night and couldn’t sleep unless he sneaked into his brother’s bed.

Leng Zhao: “My brother secretly drew talismans on my baseball glove in the middle of the night. I pretended not to know. The talisman was crooked, though. He’s really bad at drawing.”

Yan Shiyi: “He thinks I don’t know he keeps all his nightmares hidden under his pillow so I won’t find out. Silly boy, I’m a Door God. I secretly clear away that mass of black energy under your pillow every morning.”

When Leng Zhao was attacked by a real evil spirit at school, he instinctively threw out a golden flash of light and smashed the monster. Then he turned around with tears in his eyes. “Brother, I think... I’m not human?” Yan Shiyi sighed and patted his head. “Right, we’re not human. We’re Door Gods!”
