[One woman, several men + intense romantic push and pull + some ensemble elements + both chaste and unchaste relationships + don’t read if that bothers you]
Portia, an office drone at a top Hong Kong law firm, wakes up as Shen Jiawei in 1950s Hong Kong.
She’s heard of transmigration and knows her way around an adventure in another world. As long as she’s alive, it’s a win. Let’s go, GOGOGO!
Life choice: Marry a 57-year-old man and become his fourth concubine? [NO]
Where to live: Rent a tenement after being kicked out, or move to the walled city? [The Peninsula Hotel]
Career choice: With women paid less than men, should she return to the law firm or become a secretary? [Write books]
Life is like a game of chess. Every move holds a thousand possibilities, and every choice opens up something new:
Possibility One: Gu Yanfu, Fourth Master of the Gu family, Justice of the Peace, and a 29-year-old Hong Kong barrister.
They meet from the start: “Miss Jiawei, life is full of disappointments. I owe you an apology. Let me marry you in my brother’s place.”
Possibility Two: Lin Fu’an, the murderous tiger of Diao Jingshan.
They meet at the center: “Weiwei, your brother asked me to take good care of you.”
Possibility Three: M. A. R. Herries, tai-pan of Jardine Matheson, and creditor to every rich person in Hong Kong.
They meet on the second line: “Portia, I fancy you.”
That’s all for the preview of possibilities. The story begins here.
I haven't read much yet, but if I don't write in Mandarin, there will actually be a lot fewer readers, and I won't be able to understand it.
I give you a five-star review. The story is good, but you can't speak in the Yong dialect. I'm from Northern Jiangsu and can understand some Wu dialect dialogues, but it's hard to read and very uncomfortable 🤦
I stayed up late the day before yesterday to catch up. It was well written. It was very realistic from living under the shelter of others to trying to escape every step of the way. There are also other people who want to eat a weak woman, but are still hypocritical, and the descriptions are realistic.
It's very interesting. The plot is very compact and integrates the customs and knowledge of Hong Kong in the 1950s.
The plot design is good, the story is good, and the characters are good
Oops, the beginning of the plot is not bad, but my brain is a little tired of language switching. I can only guess half of the Wu dialect, so I have to guess some.
