Using “a life of patchwork” as its central metaphor, this book follows Li Hongzhang’s life of more than seventy years to depict the Qing Empire’s journey from internal strife and foreign threats to its ultimate collapse. The story mainly unfolds from Li Hongzhang’s perspective, while also weaving in the observations of the fictional Lin Yifeng, a young journalist recently returned from overseas. Together, their viewpoints create a dual narrative of “those caught up in events failing to see clearly” and “bystanders seeing the truth.” At its heart, the novel explores how an intellectual elite who clearly understands the system’s problems, yet is powerless to change them, struggles onward under the weight of history.
