During a heavy rainstorm, four members of the Song family traveled through the world at the same time, but were trapped in the same valley for four eras nearly a hundred years apart.
The father woke up next to a broken canal during the famine years, the mother encountered a grain disaster, the daughter took over a dilapidated mill that was blocked by grain stores, and the son opened his eyes to the saline-alkali wasteland ninety-six years later.
At midnight every night, the four doors are only open for an hour. People cannot transcend time, only things no more than twelve taels can be sent from the past to the future.
So the father built canals to open up wasteland, the mother identified diseases and protected crops, the daughter milled grain and went into business, and the son rowed salt and resumed farming. If you leave an extra seed in the past, you may be able to save one more family in the future; if you dig the wrong ditch today, you may only be left with a bitter well and wasteland in a few decades.
It wasn't until the son saw his mother's name on the black monument in the future that they discovered that the famines in the four eras were never isolated natural disasters, but a network of food, water and land that lasted for nearly a hundred years.
The Song family can change history, but it cannot make decisions for everyone forever.
What they want to leave behind is not the legend of "saving the ancestors", but a set of methods for ordinary people to have enough to eat even without the Song family.
