Synopsis

In 2026, humanity confirmed for the first time that gluons, which mediate the strong force, could bind to one another and form matter made of “force.”

Forty-one years later, following this path, humanity created the first artificial golden core.

From then on, cultivation became an engineering discipline. Spiritual roots could be tested, Dao foundations implanted, and ascension given national standards.

Zhou Jiming’s job was to investigate those who ascended outside the approved standards.

Until an experimental accident killed seven researchers at once, yet their corpses continued to circulate their cultivation techniques.

There were clearly only seven bodies at the scene, but the surveillance footage always showed an eighth person standing there.

That person had Zhou Jiming’s face.

From that day on, an unclassified, unnumbered Dao foundation that should not have existed appeared inside him.

It let him see the connections between power, contracts, memories, and even emotions, and sever them.

The price was that every connection he severed made him lose a piece of himself.

The flavors he liked, the scent of his hometown, his resentment toward his father, his love for someone, and finally, his name.

Only later did Zhou Jiming learn that every golden core humanity created was helping some being asleep within the laws of the universe piece its body back together.

And what they called ascension was nothing more than abandoning oneself and returning to its consciousness.

As the whole world began waiting to ascend, Zhou Jiming received the highest-level directive, unsigned by anyone:

The Heavenly Law is malfunctioning.

Assimilation is forbidden.
