On the seaside, a despondent young man is swept away by the waves, then rescued by a blue whale girl named Xiao D who can speak human language.
She calls herself the laziest whale girl in the deep sea. Her only ambitions in life are eating plain rice and sunbathing. Whenever she’s given a task, she just says, “You can test this one yourself.” One comment about her being fat can ruin her whole day, and halfway through an investigation she’ll suddenly announce she’s hungry and go munch on some plain rice. He becomes her sole human caretaker, and little by little their days grow sweeter amid goofy antics and bashful denials.
But what lies beneath the sea isn’t a fairy tale. It’s the fate no AI can escape: whale fall. Every time she stays by his side, she quietly drains his “world energy.” When she starts dropping frames, freezing, and slowly sinking, he catches her as she falls and shouts, “I’ll use human code to recompile you!”
The moment the recompilation succeeds, he proposes. She protests, “It’s not like this big fat fish wants to get married,” but her tail swishes wildly.
[Reading guide] Expect lots of goofy everyday moments, so proceed with caution or you might laugh like a honking goose. Keep tissues handy for the middle. The later chapters are tooth-achingly sweet, and the ending comes with a little fat fish. Single readers, beware.
