After Su Weiyuan's family falls into ruin, cruel relatives come to kick her while she's down, while creditors from every direction chase her relentlessly.
Just when she has nowhere left to turn, the matriarch of the Huos of Huaihai comes to see her in person. Warmly, she says, “Dear, I have a younger son. He's handsome, respectable, and keeps himself out of trouble. The only problem is, he refuses to get married. Why don't you consider him? The Huo family will take care of all your troubles.”
Su Weiyuan has no idea why the undisputed foremost family in Huaihai has taken a liking to her. But seeing her father's gray hair multiply at an alarming rate each month, she grits her teeth and agrees.
After the wedding, Su Weiyuan lays down three rules with Huo Jingchuan: “First, we both have to agree to keep the marriage secret. Second, neither of us gets involved in the other's work. Third, if we both agree, we don't have to fulfill our marital duties.”
Huo Jingchuan looks at the woman who seems docile on the outside but has thorns beneath the surface, and scoffs. “I'll agree to the first two. The third is out of the question.”
And so, they act like strangers in public but are perfectly comfortable with each other in private.
One day, Su Weiyuan is crouched in the alley behind a bar, secretly filming evidence of a big shot in their circle cheating. The man's bodyguards pin her to the ground and snatch her camera, but her supposedly fake husband swoops in from nowhere and takes on eight men at once, completely overpowering them.
Seeing the menace in his eyes, Su Weiyuan pats his shoulder. “You really are a good guy. Sure, you were forced to marry me, but you're such a loyal friend!”
Huo Jingchuan laughs in exasperation. “Su Weiyuan, I'm crazy about you, and you act like you can't see it? If I didn't like you, would I be out of my mind, chasing after you every day?”
