Su Mu is the lowest-ranking firewood-chopping servant at Rottenwood Cliff. His spiritual root test comes back as “no spiritual roots,” and everyone takes a turn kicking him while he’s down.
Then he splits open an ancient tree that was struck by lightning three hundred years ago and digs a piece of lightning-struck wood out of its heart. The wood can talk, and it’s full of insults. Inside dwells Yun Ji, an ancient patriarch who failed to ascend and is now reduced to a wisp of a remnant soul.
“Want to stay alive? Become my disciple.”
“Sure. Lend me some spirit stones first.”
One wants to rely on his disciple to cultivate anew; the other just wants to sell the wood for a fortune. Neither knows that this “good-for-nothing” has a Thunder Tribulation Spirit Body hidden within him, one not seen in three hundred years, and it feeds on heavenly lightning. With one disciple who loves to run his mouth and one master with a sharp tongue, the pair zap their way from the servant quarters to the tournament arena.
But they don’t know that the truth behind the ascension attempt three hundred years ago is waiting to dig this piece of wood up by its roots.
