[Ming Dynasty + Embroidered Guard + Historical High Martial Arts + Mystery and Reverse Investigation + Decisive and Ruthless]
My name is Shen Yan. I was a criminal appeals prosecutor in China, specializing in cold cases.
When I opened my eyes again, I was a condemned prisoner in the imperial prison.
This is right up my alley, but I’d rather not take the case.
The jailer forced me to stamp my mark on a death register listing thirty-seven people. If I did, the case would be closed and I’d take responsibility. If I refused, I probably wouldn’t survive the night.
I refused.
The stakes were too high. I couldn’t take the fall.
I flipped through the register. The causes of death had been added later, and the ink didn’t match. The entire thirty-seventh page had been torn out. The line for the person who handled the case was blank.
They were clearly setting me up to close the case.
That very night, the first dead man broke in to kill me. He was a Meridian-Opening expert, and he sent a surge of true energy into my meridians with a single palm strike. He didn’t know I had a Myriad Laws Furnace inside me, one that refined any true energy, medicinal power, or deadly poison that entered my body.
After the furnace flames burned through it, I went from the peak of Body Tempering to Blood Shifting and pinned him dead beside the register.
I was terrified at the time. Then he was gone.
At least now one page of the register was true.
From today on, I’ll settle these thirty-seven lives one by one. If even one is missing, I lose.
The first thing I taught the Embroidered Guards was: “Who signed this document?”
Don’t ask. I’m just afraid of being made to take the fall.
But before the assassin breathed his last, he managed to squeeze out a sentence:
“The thirty-seventh page isn’t here.”
I looked at the register with its missing page.
Fine. This is getting more and more criminal.
