After spending the night at an internet cafe, Xiao Wu wakes to find himself lying in a bloodstained earthen house. The rain outside stops abruptly, and someone knocks on the door at the same time. A voice outside asks, "How many living people are hiding in there?"
He tries to speak, but a memory that isn't his suddenly fills his mind: a bespectacled man huddling on a roof beam. One of his teammates makes a "squeak," and the next second the door bursts open and the village's eerie inhabitants flood in. The last thought of that man's life is carved into Xiao Wu's skull: "Don't make a sound."
Xiao Wu clamps a hand over his own mouth and his teammate's.
He survives. The price is that he inherits every fragment of the dead man's memories.
The Haunted House. Ninety-nine blood doors. Every time Xiao Wu clears a door, his brain is flooded with the memories of the previous person to die there. The farther he goes, the more people he inherits. He has what seem like prophetic "walkthroughs," and his teammates treat him as their lifeline.
But the memories begin fighting each other.
One voice tells him to run, another tells him to charge, and another whispers softly in his ear: "Don't trust me. I'm just waiting for you to come and die in my place."
Worse, he inherits the memories of the previous person who died after being betrayed by a teammate. The sleeve of the hand that pushed him into the abyss had a faded teddy bear charm on it. Now one of Xiao Wu's teammates has an identical teddy bear hanging from their sleeve.
Ninety-nine dead people live inside Xiao Wu's mind. They are all trying to answer one question:
Which door do you want to die behind next...?
After finishing the pursuit, the various exquisite settings in the book are fascinating and make you want to keep exploring!
