“Sang Ling, be smart and behave yourself. You'll have a good life once we get there.”
The van bounced violently. The white man in the front seat spoke Chinese so badly it sounded like he had a radish in his mouth, while the black man beside him whistled and laughed along.
Sang Ling slowly opened her eyes in the back seat. Nylon ropes had numbed her hands and feet, and the sweet, fishy smell of milk lingered on the back of her neck. Her mother had personally given it to her just before they left.
Her own mother had said she would take Sang Ling and her younger brother to the city for a better life. Then she'd turned around and sold them to northern Myanmar.
Her brother's kidney was a match for some big shot, so they were going to harvest it.
She was pretty, so they'd make her pleasure people first, then cut out her organs when she got old and feed them to the dogs.
The white man leaned over, his filthy hand reaching straight for her face.
Sang Ling suddenly laughed.
The next second, blue-violet lightning crackled from her palm, and the ropes around her wrists instantly burned to black ash.
She reached up and grabbed the white man's wrist. Electricity surged through him, making his whole body convulse.
“OMG, you scared me.” Sang Ling raised an eyebrow as lightning crackled at her fingertips. “Who do you think you are, touching me?”
The van's windows rattled in the wind. She looked at the two terrified foreigners in the front seat and sneered inwardly.
The lightning bolt that had killed her on Mount Wutai had been reborn with her.
This time, she'd make every scumbag who owed her pay back everything, with interest!
