[Hardcore Medicine + Fighting Superstition + Career Comeback]
An emergency room doctor wakes up as a young widow, having been force-fed poison and thrown into a woodshed to await her death beside her husband.
Lin Shu doesn’t run. She walks out of the woodshed and slices open the clan chief’s sacrificial pig with a single stroke.
The liver is covered in white spots, and the whole village cries, “The ancestors are punishing us!” She taps the spots with her knife. “Worm eggs. Dogs eat raw meat, their droppings fertilize the vegetables, people eat raw vegetables, and the worms get into their stomachs. Ten years later, their livers look like this.”
She grabs the child everyone says is “possessed by a fox spirit.” Before long, the child wakes up.
The clan chief races to the county yamen that night to accuse her of sorcery. When County Magistrate Zhao Mingyuan arrives with soldiers to arrest her, she hands him a piece of paper. “No one in your family lives past fifty for three generations, not because of bad feng shui, but because your blood is too thick with fat. I can treat it. First, sign the Public Health Ordinance.”
Later, when the princess has a difficult labor, Lin Shu goes in, and both mother and child survive. When an arrow pierces a general’s lung, she goes in, and he recovers completely. After ten years of the emperor’s headaches, the Imperial Preceptor says, “The dragon energy is surging to your head.” Lin Shu gives the emperor a single acupuncture needle. He opens his eyes and asks what she wants.
She unrolls a document: medicine will be added to the imperial examinations, and no one who doesn’t understand the organs may enter government; the Imperial Medical Bureau will become a medical academy; and an Anti-Superstition Act will be promulgated throughout the land.
The emperor covers the back of his hand. “What if I refuse to sign?”
“Then it’ll hurt again next month.”
“Sign.”
The people who once raised torches to burn her now line up to beg for treatment.
She stands at the entrance to her clinic, where a notice is displayed:
“Want treatment? First memorize the material on the third page of my Fundamentals of Human Physiology: where worms come from and how disease enters the body. If you can’t recite it, wait outside.”
Oh, let me go, the writing is not bad.
