During the reign of Wu Zetian in the Tang Dynasty, an old Daoist from Zhongnan Mountain rescued an orphan in the wilderness and raised him. Starting at the age of five, the boy grew up at a Daoist temple on Zhongnan Mountain alongside his master and a group of senior fellow disciples. Highly perceptive, blessed with a rare Double Canopy fate, intelligent, studious, and hardworking, he mastered the eighteen traditional martial arts, Daoist lightness and energy techniques, and every branch of Daoist tradition. He was also well versed in the Book of Changes, Qimen Dunjia, Liuyao divination, Plum Blossom Numerology, feng shui, and Daoist rituals.
At ten, his master sent him to study at a friend's temple for five years. By the age of fifteen, he had become well versed in Buddhist teachings too. Seeing that there was nothing left to teach him, the Zen master sent him back to the Daoist temple on Zhongnan Mountain. His master then arranged for him to study for three years under a renowned scholar and physician of the day. There he mastered poetry, history, and the principles of medicine, and developed greater wisdom than most in dealing with people and navigating the world.
At eighteen, he returned to the temple on Zhongnan Mountain and took part in the annual examination for students. He presented the Nine-Grid Five-Element Energy Fortune-Enhancement Method, which he had developed by synthesizing the wisdom of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. The method changed ordinary people's fortunes by drawing on the Five Element energies of objects, environments, and people in nine different ways. His master praised him. But considering his extraordinary abilities and mastery of all five Daoist arts of mountain, medicine, fate, physiognomy, and divination, his master decided he was ready to go out into the world, fight evil, and save all living beings.
He then went alone into the bustling streets, where he helped a kindhearted man. The man offered him a building and established a lecture hall for spreading the faith. He took seven disciples and two attendants, making ten of them in all, and set up the hall to spread the teachings and save the world. Every disciple has a dramatic story of their own. This book mainly tells the story of how he uses the Nine-Grid Five-Element Energy Fortune-Enhancement Method to help his disciples and lead them together on the path of saving all living beings.
