Su Yesheng is a heartbreak vine. The day she took human form, her mother’s final words came from deep beneath the earth: “Don’t look back.” Barefoot, she walks into the human world. With the “life vine” in her left hand, she heals the sick, but her right hand becomes tainted with deadly poison: every life she saves makes the poison stronger.
While fleeing, she reconnects the broken roots scattered over a century, carries back the thick root sealed beneath a well, and frees the old root imprisoned in frozen soil for three hundred years. She puts the roots that were cut apart, suppressed, and forgotten back into the earth, piece by piece. The world once broke her, but she has grown herself back.
