Lin Chen is twenty-eight, an ordinary worker in every way. On the day he is laid off, he discovers a dark red spiral mark on his left wrist. No amount of rubbing will remove it; it seems to have grown right out of his skin. The next day, he receives news that his parents have died in a car accident. It wasn't an accident.
He enters a tower that only he can see. It has a hundred floors, each one the ruins of a destroyed world: in an abandoned hospital, corpses wander the halls, calling his parents' names; in a lone city at the end of the world, survivors stay alive by eating one another's memories; Qingyun Sect, interstellar battlefields, the City of Mists... The final night of countless worlds being "devoured" has been frozen into floor after floor of dungeons. There is no System, no progress bar, no merciful rules. Survive, or become part of the tower. Climbers who are assimilated forget who they are and become the tower's "ferrymen" or "guardians," collecting other people's wishes for the tower like shadows.
The higher Lin Chen climbs, the deeper he sinks. He gathers the forgotten names, lights lamps no one remembers, and gradually pieces together the truth about the tower: its master was the first person to clear it. He devoured countless worlds and survived for over a thousand years by consuming the names and wishes of the living. The seven cores Lin Chen has been collecting are precisely what he needs to blow up the tower.
He has no grand ambition to save the world. He only wants to send home the people whose names he has remembered. He doesn't know that, at the end of this road, a decisive battle awaits, one that can only be won by giving his own life.
The tower's darkness has no end, and neither does Lin Chen's road. He won, and he lost. In the end, the only one who remembers him is the tower.
The writing is ok, but it's not a systematic and enjoyable writing. But it is interesting, it is a coming-of-age novel. There are not too many routines and counter-intuitive poisonous points, and more and more details are added.
