[1,094 days left on the lifespan countdown! If I don’t catch a hundred vengeful ghosts, I’ll have to go down below and work as a laborer!]
Chen Mo, the most miserable agent of the Underworld stationed among the living.
Back then, he couldn’t keep his hands to himself and tore up a contract from the netherworld. His lifespan was docked, leaving him with only three years. To stay alive, he’s forced to take ghost-hunting jobs. But the Underworld pairs him with a hot-tempered man from Shaanxi who sits by the roadside eating paomo and relies on brute force to deal with ghosts.
Other agents chant spells and draw talismans. Chen Mo’s Zhong Kui smacks a ghost and says, “What in the world is this? You dare stir up trouble right under the God of Tai Sui’s nose?”
Chen Mo has only just set up a ritual array when Zhong Kui is already sipping his drink and urging the ghost along: “Get reincarnated, quick. Don’t keep me from listening to the opera.”
Chen Mo: …I’m here to repay my debt to the living, not to play your straight man!
Then one day, Chen Mo discovers a line of tiny writing on the contract he tore up:
“Whoever destroys this contract shall become the next Judge of the Underworld.”
The Underworld doesn’t want him to repay his debt.
It wants him to take over.
