Antique peddler Lu Yuan makes a living selling goods from a street stall, but life has backed him into a corner. He is months behind on rent and has no way to pay. The only thing he cannot let go of is his grandfather, who disappeared twenty years ago. The old man’s diary has only one final warning left: “Don’t look for me. You’ll die.” A mysterious merchant, Boss Ma, arrives with a reward of five hundred thousand yuan and tells Lu Yuan outright that his grandfather is trapped in a mirage tomb deep in the desert, built by King Mu of Zhou.
The ancient tomb uses a technique that halts time to imprison living beings. Anyone who enters becomes a living corpse, neither alive nor dead. Lu Yuan joins forces with archaeology expert Shen Du and Gu Ran, a photographer skilled in extreme survival, to venture into the sea of sand. One of the six dried corpses guarding the underground tomb has already awakened, and it hunts without end, tracking the moisture in the living.
They accidentally discover that there are six thousand-year-old tombs in the world, each hiding a bronze mirror. Gathering them all grants immortality. Lu Yuan travels through the Mirage, Dragon Head, Penglai, and other tombs. He has never sought the hollow promise of eternal life; he only wants to break the curse and bring back his trapped grandfather.
Boss Ma travels with them, apparently offering financial support, but in truth he covets the power of the dragon veins within the mirrors. The moment the mechanism is activated, he bares his fangs and points his gun at Lu Yuan’s back. The dried corpses in the tombs and the mirages of the illusionary realm may be deadly, but the scheming, murderous hearts of people are the hardest death trap standing in their way.
This tomb-robbery novel really gets more and more interesting the more I read it, and the plot is very interesting throughout. The various weird scenes and sudden dangers in the tomb are written in a particularly graphic way. The suspense comes one after another, and you can't guess what will happen in the next second. The interaction between the characters is also very natural, there is no blunt plot, and it is particularly enjoyable when the foreshadowing is slowly revealed. I couldn't put it down once I opened it in my spare time, and I could read it for a long time without realizing it. Overall, it was a great pleasure to read.
