Famine Year: A Three-Year-Old Girl Leads Her Two Brothers to Stockpile Food and Flee

[Fleeing famine + farming + spatial storage + raising children + stockpiling food in a disaster] In her previous life, Su Xiaoxiao was a moon-entwining vine. Her biggest worries each day were “Which side should I bask in the moonlight with today?” and “Is the dew sweet today?” But when she opens her eyes in this life, she’s become a three-year-old human child. Her parents are gone, her house is drafty, and everyone in the village wants to cheat her out of her twenty taels of silver. She’s also had a terrifying dream: a year from now, a devastating drought will sweep across the land. The scorching sun will split the earth, riverbeds will dry up completely, and crops will wither in the fields. Grain prices will skyrocket, famine will spread to its worst extent, and refugees will plunder everywhere. People will even eat one another. She’s a little vine who has only just gained a spirit form. How could she have ever seen anything like this? But there’s good news: the essence of her previous life has become a pocket dimension. It can store things, multiply them, and even grow crops! The bad news: she’s only three, she can barely walk steadily, and the shelves are out of reach when she tries to stockpile food. She’s so small that if she goes outside, human traffickers might target her. What should she do? Buy people, of course! So she takes her silver and follows Grandpa Village Chief to the official market, where she spends one tael to buy two young men who are convicts. They’re the family she’s bought for herself. Her eldest brother, Lu Yuan, is a man of few words and a ruthless streak. Chopping wood with his bare hands is easier for him than eating. Her second brother, Xie Jingxing, is sweet-tongued and a good actor. He can wrap every auntie in the village around his little finger. She points at them. “Big Brother chops wood. Second Brother cooks.” The two brothers look down at this tiny thing who isn’t even as tall as the stove and fall silent. Later, when the drought arrives and refugees storm the village, Big Brother draws his knife, and Second Brother rolls up his sleeves. The family heads south in search of a new future!
