The mountains of Yungui stretch in every direction, full of treacherous passes. Of the refugees who flee into the mountains, fewer than one in ten make it out alive. Some vanish into the endless forests, some fall to the claws and fangs of ferocious beasts, and others become prey to the evil spirits and monsters lurking in the mountains. In these perilous ranges, a group of people wander from place to place. They do not join religious sects, practice magic, save the poor and downtrodden, or meddle in worldly affairs. All they ask for in payment is coarse grain and clean water. They never enter the mountains by day or visit villages by night. They do not carry messages for the living, only news of the dead.
The mountain folk regard them with both awe and wariness, and have called them the Mountain Travelers for generations.
