## Main characters
- Chen Tieshan: 46 years old, retired surveying and mapping soldier, opened a mountain goods store after being laid off from the geological team. In 1969, my grandfather Chen Jiujin walked through the Shimen at the bottom of the river.
- Wang Shengli: Henan native, Chen Tieshan's old squad leader in the army, and truck driver. Be bold and careful, and believe in the old rule of "the cock crows and the light goes out."
- Su Lan: Folklore researcher at the County Cultural Center. She studied folklore as a graduate student. Her graduation thesis was about Baihe Village. She has the archives of the Republic of China in her hands.
- Zhang Shouhe (Lao Wei): a fish farmer in Baihe Village. He is timid but familiar with the river and recognizes Chen Jiujin's oilcloth notebook.
- Ma Sanjin (appears later): The leader of the tomb robbing gang in the 1990s, who entered the Forest of Steles through another robbing hole.
-Lampkeeper (appears later): The survivor who went to the bottom of the river with Chen Jijin in 1969, was raised by a lamp for more than thirty years.
