In 1994, Linjiang Heavy Machinery Factory was merged by a foreign consortium.
The annexation order was written politely, but the conditions were harsh: the East German gantry mill that had been idle for three years in the machine repair shop had to be put back into service within a month. If repairs failed, the workshops were withdrawn and thirty-seven people went home.
The whole factory said that the bed was already scrap metal.
Only Shen Changgeng didn't believe it. His father is an eighth-level fitter, and he was demerited for this bed three years ago. On the day he was discharged from the hospital, he only left a note: The bed was not broken, but was killed by someone else.
