At midnight, every phone in the city receives the same verdict.
[Guilty party: Lu Chenzhou.]
[Crime: Causing a citywide disaster seven years from now.]
[Complete a public trial before dawn, or ten thousand people in the east of the city will lose their shadows.]
Overnight, Lu Chenzhou, a corpse restoration specialist, becomes the city’s public enemy. Just then, the nameless body he is restoring leaves behind two final words:
“Dad.”
“Whatever you do, don’t prove that you’re innocent.”
Facing the cameras outside his door, the police lines, and the city’s ever-tightening rules, Lu Chenzhou opens the door himself.
“The verdict isn’t wrong. This really did start with me.”
“But you’d better ask yourselves first: which version of you, from which tomorrow, was erased?”
From that night on, the dead begin offering testimony, lies alter the rules, and the city is carved into a series of disaster courtrooms. Lu Chenzhou no longer seeks only to clear his name. He intends to find whatever wrote the verdict and seize the city’s future back.
