Before chaos was divided, heaven and earth were in turmoil, and all was vast and unseen.
Ever since Pangu cleaved open the primordial void, the clear and turbid have been distinguished. All living things look up to his supreme virtue, and all creation flourishes in goodness.
It is said that after Pangu created the world, the Three Sovereigns ruled and the Five Emperors established order. The world was thus divided into four great continents: Dongsheng Shenzhou, Xiniu Hezhou, Nanzhan Buzhou, and Beiju Luzhou.
Far out in the sea of Dongsheng Shenzhou stood a mountain of immortals called Huaguo Mountain.
At its summit was a celestial stone that contained a divine embryo. One day, the embryo matured, and an egg emerged. It transformed into a stone monkey, whose eyes shot two beams of golden light straight into the Celestial Palace.
Just as the stone monkey was about to bow to the four directions and determine whether it was male or female, a young man suddenly appeared from the depths of the forest.
The young man carried a Qiankun bamboo basket on his back and held half a piece of verdant immortal grass in his hand. His eyes lit up as he shouted:
“What a top-grade wild spirit monkey! Don’t move. You’re going to be my spirit pet!”
The stone monkey froze at his words. The golden light vanished from its eyes. It scratched its cheek and gave the unexpected visitor a sidelong glance, taking him for some mad mortal from who-knows-where.
Little did it know that the heavenly way had turned, and karma had begun to bind them together. A wild, chaotic adventure, no, a great journey west to subdue demons, vanquish devils, seek immortals, and capture spirit pets, was about to begin with that single shout.
