In 2030, the “Mutation Tide” erupts across Blue Star. Unknown rules tied to folk tales scattered among the people begin seeping into reality on a massive scale. Ordinary people who touch the boundaries of these rules mutate into mindless aberrations. Within three years, the old global order collapses completely. Nine human self-governing territories, each retaining a complete industrial system, hold one another in check. Their borders are riddled with zones contaminated by the rules, and tens of thousands of “spatial anomaly anchors” beyond the reach of physical laws have appeared. The protagonist, Li Zhu, works the night shift at the front desk of the “Welcome Inn,” located on the edge of a contaminated zone. This run-down inn, with only a dozen or so guest rooms, is itself a high-level spatial anomaly anchor. Half its guests are refugees fleeing disaster, and the other half are ability users tainted by rule contamination.
