When the Classic of Mountains and Seas' Ba Snake destroys half a city in an instant, when the Qin Yuan's poisonous feathers blot out the sky over the Western Mountains, when Luwu from Kunlun tramples the defensive line to dust
Zhang Jun looks at the ancient beasts before him, capable of destroying heaven and earth, and a screen pops up in his mind: the Illustrated Bestiary of the Myriad Spirits of the Mountains and Seas. Capturing a beast grants him its abilities.
All of humanity fears these monsters.
Zhang Jun stares at the beast before him, lost in thought.
“That's not right. This isn't how a monster-catching game works. As a monster, you're supposed to get beaten into submission by me, then reluctantly surrender, and finally let me capture you. Why did you just come in on your own? This isn't how the process is supposed to go.”
Having studied ancient myths in his previous life, he suddenly finds these strange beasts rather familiar.
Capture the Ba Snake and gain [Swallowing Elephants, Containing All]: the strength to swallow the heavens, devour enormous things, and hold all things within its belly.
Capture Bifang and gain [One Wing Summons the Flames]: ride the wind through the sky, call down heavenly fire, and blaze with flames that leave fires in your wake.
Capture Lushu and gain [Brocade Veins, Enduring Life]: imbue yourself with the life force of heaven and earth, with vigorous blood, enduring vitality, and a body and soul nourished from within.
As humanity awakens to high-level martial arts, the strong run rampant. Zhang Jun, however, has no interest in any of that.
He just wants to know where the next beast in the bestiary is.
The garrison commander says, “We lost three squads trying to take down that fierce beast, ”
Zhang Jun is already back, knife in hand.
“...Done. Next.”
I read it in one sitting and found this book about mountains and seas and strange beasts very enjoyable. Modern cities collide with ancient times. The setting of "The Classic of Mountains and Seas" is very innovative. It combines strange beasts, special training martial arts tests, and multi-party power games, and the rhythm is relaxed and moderate. The protagonist's growth line is solid and believable, and there is no brainless cheating. Every magical power and every realm breakthrough corresponds to a dangerous encounter. The characters are vivid and three-dimensional. Whether it is the mentor Zhou Zhenye or the companions around him, they are not tool men and each has his own position. The textual research on the alien beasts also shows that the author has put in a lot of effort and adapted it with reference to the original text of the ancient books. The habits and abilities of the alien beasts are consistent with the original records and will not make people uncomfortable. The undercurrents and foreshadowing are just right. The two long lines of Guichao Sect and Demon Court are intertwined. On one side is the realistic competition of the martial arts test, and on the other side are the secrets left behind by the ancient mountains and seas. The more I read, the more curious I become about the follow-up direction. The descriptions of the battle scenes are full of impact, and the scenes of martial arts duels and alien beasts fighting are full of atmosphere. Highly recommended to readers who like high martial arts and exotic beasts. Looking forward to subsequent updates! Recommendation index five stars
