Li Laifu, a young man with a portable storage space, tells the story of survival in a courtyard house in Beijing in the 1960s. With material advantages in hand, he went to and from the pigeon market to resell antique mountain products, and went into the mountains to hunt and fish in exchange for food stamps and cash. While taking care of his stepmother, younger brothers and sisters, and supporting his grandparents in the countryside, he also dealt with scoundrels and speculators, and got to know a group of simple neighbors. By chance, he won the iron job of a railway security officer, and worked among factories, security teams, and neighbors. He relied on his kindness and ability to resolve numerous conflicts, leading the people around him to escape hunger and cold, and live a stable and prosperous life in the years of scarcity.
