Her ex-husband, a poor scholar who married into a wealthy family, passes the highest imperial exam. His first order of business is to throw his former wife and daughter out with nothing, hoping to starve them to death.

In a ruined temple during a torrential downpour, three-year-old A Bao drags a rusty iron cleaver and angrily jabs it into the ground.

Boom! A waterfall of piping-hot white-jade rice porridge gushes from the parched earth!

The mother and daughter sell their goods at bargain prices, monopolize the nation’s grain supplies, and buy up every shop in the capital.

When the ex is so hungry he looks like a dog, kneeling outside their door to beg for a bowl of sour porridge, A Bao hoists her huge cleaver and takes the hand of the unhinged royal uncle who controls the court.

“Uncle, if we cut off my awful dad’s grain supplies today, should we just start a rebellion?”
