Darling, I’ll See You in Court

Divorce lawyer Xiao Kai has reviewed more contracts in five years of legal work than he has seen married couples.

On his first day in practice, he takes two divorce cases: a young woman is willing to leave with nothing, explaining, “He has no ambition”; a full-time homemaker who has devoted twenty years to her family is given the same line by her husband: “You can’t keep up with me anymore.”

Xiao Kai understands the law. He understands evidence. He knows how to uncover the 2.13 million yuan siphoned away by tracing bank statements. But he doesn’t understand why someone who has devoted twenty years to a family can, in the end, be undone by a single sentence.

Then, in his mother’s old account book, he discovers a note tucked inside that has been there for thirty years.

Only then does he understand: some cases are beyond the reach of the law.
