Grandparent and Grandchild on a Desert Island

On the day the college entrance exams ended, Lin Yue woke up to find the whole world changed. Seven billion people on Blue Star each had an uninhabited island of their own, and had to survive alone. Fortunately, anyone over sixty and any child under fifteen was randomly assigned to their closest family member. That meant Lin Yue now had two precious companions on his island: his sixty-eight-year-old grandfather, a master carpenter, and his sixty-five-year-old grandmother, a seasoned gardener. While most people found their families a burden, Lin Yue soon discovered that his grandfather could build fortresses out of wood, and his grandmother could turn seeds into a vegetable garden. The fishing rod in Lin Yue’s hands could also reel in treasure chests full of supplies. While others fought desperately for a single mouthful of fresh water, the three of them had already built a treehouse, grown crops, and tamed a kestrel to serve as their lookout. Extreme cold, scorching heat, endless nights, and typhoons: natural disasters came one after another. Hunger, disease, bandits, and tyranny: human calamities followed close behind. With his grandparents at his side, Lin Yue went from struggling to survive to gradually building a home of his own on the sea. Then, in the winter when everything froze, he received a distress signal from his parents and younger sister. His maternal grandparents, both over sixty, were still trapped on another island, too. The hardest part of this journey wasn’t fighting natural disasters, but protecting the people you love most in the face of them. This is Lin Yue’s story, a heartwarming legend about how family can light the way through the apocalypse.
