A Slow Fire in the Human World

Period Drama | A Woman's Journey of Growth | Family Ethics | Rural Ensemble Cast

In the early 1970s, three-year-old Tian Xiu cried for a pancake. There was no food in the house, so her mother shaped one out of mud and soothed her by telling her to watch the stove fire. When the fire went out, the pancake would be ready, her mother said. The fire went out, but the pancake never cooked, and her mother never came back... From then on, she grew up with her father, a hopeless alcoholic, learning amid hunger and beatings to eat less, cry less, and read people's moods. That mud pancake became the childhood she could never escape.
