Siheyuan: The Deaf Old Lady’s Treasure Trove

While clearing out Grandma Deaf's belongings, He Yuzhu dragged a dust-covered camphorwood chest from beneath her bed. Inside, among a few old keepsakes, lay a yellowed diary. In crooked handwriting, the old woman had recorded sixty years' worth of the courtyard's hidden accounts: who had secretly appropriated public housing, who had framed a neighbor, which seemingly harmonious couples were actually strangers sharing a bed, and how even the truth behind Qin Huairu's marriage into the courtyard was not what it seemed. As Silly Zhu turned the pages, the masks of every “good person” in the courtyard fell away between the lines. Clutching the diary, which could bring the whole courtyard crashing down, he stood before the old woman's portrait and suddenly understood why she had always silently shaken her head beneath the locust tree. Some truths can only be heard by the deaf, and spoken plainly by the mute.
